Engineering
is the application of mathematics, science and other relevant disciplines to
innovate new or improve existing technologies. For some time now, India is
seeing a trend of students picking up engineering courses irrespective of their
real interest. One of the most celebrated jokes say that in India, students
first become engineers and then decide what to do in life. Such is the impact
of the “Engineer” tag that every year, almost 1.5 million students graduate as
engineers in various fields. If you ask me, engineering has become the new
class XII. Today, you are expected to have an engineering degree if you are in
the domain of science and technology. All these even after knowing that India
doesn’t have that many engineering vacancies, and most of the engineers end up
changing career tracks by the end of 4 years. So why is engineering still the
most sought after career path? We will try to answer this questions.
Engineering is the most sought after degree in contemporary India because Engineers are basically taught everything- technical skills, management rationale, fundamentals of economics and cost cutting, writing reports and research articles to name a few. If I’m looking to hire someone for any position, and he/she may require a training irrespective of what he/she is pursuing currently, I will always go for an engineer. I’m not saying this because I’m an engineer myself. I’m saying this because I have experienced this mini-lifetime of 4 years. Those who pass off engineering as a degree should understand that it is not a coursework, it is life. Take my word. You will learn more in engineering than you ever will in your entire life. One of the other reasons for this fad is that engineering leaves you open with almost all possible career choices. This gives a versatility dimension to the student which is one of the most important but underrated skill in your life.
Putting
everything in perspective, an Engineer is clay which can be molded into most
possible forms to fit organizational and business requirements. This has made
engineering degree a focus and core of most of the students in India. Some of
us always know what we want to be. Some of us discover it in process of
engineering. And some of them after they graduate. It is okay to be not clear.
You will be, eventually.
