After you are through with your engineering exams, you would need to choose your college and branch of engineering. This is rather a very important choice to make. Making the right choice here is important because for the next 4 years, you would be involved in studying this discipline in particular. Perhaps, if you go for a job, there are chances you might want to work in the discipline that you have graduated from.
There are always different career choices to be made and you can move from engineering to management or politics or administration or art or whatever you discover along the away, it is always wise to consider your passion, your inclination, the future scope of these branches, the kind of lifestyle you may want to have and having thought all this through, make a choice of the branch that you might be willing to specialize in.

1) Computer Science and Engineering(CSE)
One of the most popular and in-demand branch in the field of engineering, Computer Science is known for it’s good scope of application across the world. Being a computer science graduate is a plus considering that every field of work from startups to multi-nationals to every other kind of business is using Computers, software, website, app and other technology built on different framework. This has increased the demand of Computer Science as a branch and the compensation offered to these graduates are some of the best in the industry. Computer Science graduates are in high demand. The branch mainly deals with design, application, and management of information system of both software and hardware processes.
2) Information Technology
Information Technology is other popular branch of engineering and graduates in IT are in high demand by software companies, e-commerce giants and multi-nationals alike. Information Technology is an engineering division that concentrates on the study of utilizing computers and telecommunications in order to control- gather- store and circulate info. Both software and hardware sectors are parts of Information Technology. Owing to the importance and reputation of IT, present age is sometimes referred to as information technology era. IT represents a vast category of career options that are based on designing, processing, developing, supporting or managing computer and web-based technologies and devices, which constitute IT networks. The modern world is entirely IT-dependent with Information Technology applications present in nearly every aspect of our lives.
3) Electronics and Communication Engineering
An Electronics and Communication Engineering can work on designing equipment such as routers, multiplexers,switches, electronic switching systems, fibre optics and copper telephone facilities. They develops everyday devices such as transistors and integrated circuits and printed circuit boards (PCBs) too which can be used in computers, cell phones,MP3 players, and television to name a few. This discipline deals with electronic devices and software interfaces majorly. The tasks of the Electronics and Communication engineers are to direct, test, control and produce processes well, so as to ensure safety in installation and functioning of the various mechanisms.
4) Electrical Engineering
Electrical engineering is a popular branch of engineering which deals with the study and application of electricity, electromagnetism and electronics. Its subfields include electronics, power engineering, digital computers, telecom, RF engineering, control systems, and signal processing. Prime focus of the course remains on designing and testing ICs, capacitors, resistors and inductors. The electrical engineers are considered to deal with the problems associated with systems, something like electric power transmission and electrical machines etc. This course mainly includes fundamentals and principles of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, and Project Management.
The job opportunities includes companies like BHEL, DMRC, Reliance, Tata Steel etc.
5) Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering includes manufacture, design, installation and operation of- machines, engines, heating & cooling systems,robotics, and manufacturing processes.
In this field, you will be responsible for designing and developing machines right from bicycles to supersonic fighter jets-which can be extremely challenging and fulfilling, thus requiring analytical skills together with an ability to work in a team. One must love machines and be comfortable working with tools to be a successful mechanical engineer!
Mechanical engineers can work in the automotive, power generation, chemical, aerospace, computer, paper, communication, and almost all manufacturing industries. They also work in maintenance and service profiles in all industries. Plus, they can also choose teaching profession in universities and colleges.
6) Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering includes designing, planning, and executing structural workings. The profession deals with a wide range of engineering tasks including designing, construction, and supervision activities of public works like bridges, roads, tunnels, airports, buildings, dams, sewage systems, water works, ports etc. Civil engineering offers a multitude of challenging career opportunities for students. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, then constructing the project to the required scale and finally maintenance of the project.
7) Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering is that branch of engineering, which is concerned with the design, creation, and operation of machines and plants, which perform chemical reactions to solve practical problems, or make useful products. This discipline deals with the application of mathematics, physical science and life sciences, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. Chemical Engineers use maths, physics and economics to solve technical problems.
They can find jobs in petrochemical industries, chemical industries, manufacturing plants, research Institutes, mining industries, and Natural Gas industry etc.
8) Biochemical Engineering
This mainly deals with the design and construction of unit processes that involve biological organisms or molecules. This course mainly focuses on the interaction between chemical engineering, microbiology and bio chemistry. Its applications are found in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, food and water treatment industries etc. This objective of this branch is to train the students in biochemical engineering, microbial and enzyme system, biotechnology, and developing understanding of the biological or biochemical phenomena underlying in these systems. This stream also deals with the engineering analysis and optimal design of various biological systems and processes.
9) Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering refers to the discipline which deals with design of devices to measure physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, flow etc. Instrumentation engineering is the engineering specialization focused on the principle and operation of measuring instruments that are used in design and configuration of automated systems in electrical and pneumatic domains etc. These guys typically work for industries with automated processes, like the chemical or manufacturing plants. They work with the goal of improving system productivity, safety, reliability, optimization and stability etc.
10) Metallurgy
Metallurgical Engineering majorly deals with all sorts of metal related fields. Apart from basics of engineering, metallurgical course equips students with knowledge of making, designing& manufacturing of various metal products, which range from cars and bikes to buildings and planes. Here, some major areas of studies include Hydrometallurgy, Heat treatment of steels, Mechanical and welding metallurgy and so on.
