If you are reading
this book chances are that you are either already in Kota or planning to move
to the city (if you are a student) to start your preparation for one of the
engineering or medical competitive exams. If you are a parent, you might be
reading it for your wards. In other cases, you might be an engineering or a
medical enthusiast wondering whether to go to Kota for preparation or not.
Whatever be the case, I’ll try to be as clear as possible to show brief you
about the exam, the life in the city and an overall view to help you make a
decision.
Let me give you a
brief perspective about the IIT – JEE.
JEE or Joint Entrance
Exam is an exam conducted on a national level for admissions into the colleges
which are recognized as some of the top colleges in the country, namely the Indian
Institute of Technology(IIT) among other colleges.
It is your gateway to
the colleges which are considered some of the best Engineering colleges in
India. If you are preparing for the JEE exam, here is a little description
about the exam that you would be appearing in:
JEE – MAINS
JEE mains is the
preliminary exam for admissions into various engineering colleges. Earlier held
as a separate exam known as AIEEE(All India Engineering Entrance Exam), the
pattern has now changed to JEE Mains and
JEE Advanced.
In the Mains exam, the
score is used for evaluation and based on the cut-off, a small portion of
students qualify to write the JEE-Advanced exam for admissions into the IITs.
For those who do not
qualify for the Advanced level, the score from Mains exam and the ranking is
used to get admissions into colleges other than IITs.
Your JEE mains score can get you admission into the NITs(National Institute of Technology), IIITs(Indian Institute of Information Technology) and other engineering colleges.
Your JEE mains score can get you admission into the NITs(National Institute of Technology), IIITs(Indian Institute of Information Technology) and other engineering colleges.
JEE Mains is a 3 hour
paper and consists of multiple choice questions with single correct answers.
There are 30 multiple choice questions from each of Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics. The marking criteria is +4 for every correct answer, -1 for every
wrong answer and 0 for any question that is left unattempted.
The number of students
appearing for the Mains Exam is around 12 lakhs. Those qualifying for Advanced
exam are around 2.25 lakhs every year.
JEE – Advanced
The Joint Entrance
Examination – Advanced (formerly IIT - JEE) is the second and final level of
the Joint Entrance Exam for admissions into the IITs and some other colleges
like Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian
Institute of Science(IISc).
The current admission
rate is around 0.92% into the IITs and hence, this exam is considered one of
the most competitive exams in the country.
There were originally
7 IITs until 2008. Thereafter, several more IITs were built. The 7 old IITs
include IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT
Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati.
Other IITs include IIT Ropar, IIT Bhubaneshwar, IIT Gandhinagar,
IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna, IIT Indore, IIT Mandi, IIT BHU, IIT Palakkad,
IIT Tirupati, ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu and IIT Dharwad.
There are
approximately 10,000 seats in all the 23 IITs put together.
The Advanced exam has multiple sections and
marking patterns and is conducted in 2 papers of 3 hours each.
