Kota, the coaching factory, is a city located in
the southeast of the state of Rajasthan. It is around 250 kilometres from the
state capital, Jaipur. Situated on the banks of Chambal River, it is the third
most populous city of Rajasthan after Jaipur and Jodhpur and 46th most populous
city of India. Kota has a number of engineering and medical coaching institutes
which attracts students from across the country to prepare themselves for these
competitive exams.
Often referred to as The Education City of India,
the city is lined with coaching centers ranging from the mighty and famous
Bansal classes to small private institutes specializing in a particular subject
or topic. Over 1.5 lakh students from all across the country take admissions in
these institutes to crack the highly competitive engineering entrance exams
like Joint Entrance Exam(JEE) to get into IITs and NITs and medical exams to
get into some of the most sought after medical colleges in the country and
become a top-notch Engineer or Doctor.
Why would they not come to Kota, when the institutes have shown significant results over the years, with almost one-third of IIT selected students belonging to the coaching centers in the city! There has also been a history of producing some of the top rankers in the JEE (atleast 2-3 in the top 10) by these institutes. Now that is a significant result you can’t ignore.
The economy of the city is driven mainly by students coming from all across India. There are a number of expenditures involved including tuition fee for coaching classes, rent for accommodation (Hostels and PGs), food from mess, laundry services etc. As a result, a number of small businesses have evolved throughout the city. From local inhabitants building an extra room or a complete floor to rent out rooms and cash-in on the numerous students that visit the city, to the housewives running their own mess and tiffin centres, everyone is involved in making student’s life easier besides earning some extra cash. A symbiotic industry has been set-up in the process.
There are immense opportunities for IIT graduates to join in as faculty members at these premier institutes and make a lavish living besides contributing towards nation building, by educating the youth. There are a number of options for faculty members who shift from one coaching centre to another in search of better opportunities, higher pay and better hierarchy. Many of these faculty members go on to start their own coaching centres. Let me warn you about faculty members shifting the coaching itself, or opening their own coaching classes towards the end of January or February. Be prepared for it. There have been many success stories of people starting off as a teacher in one of the institutes and later on making it big by going on their own.
In a nutshell, life in Kota is an experience of a
lifetime. The coaching centres are like temples and the faculty members are
considered as deities by the students here. Yes, the teachers in Kota are that
great a personality. They go to a great extent to help their students not just
with the concepts of the subject, but the concept of life as well. They
motivate, counsel and help their students learn beyond classes. They prepare
them to answer the questions of life, not just the questions in exams!
Now that you have decided to come to Kota or are
already into the city, let me welcome you!
Welcome aboard to a new journey. I hope you enjoy the life here, learn, experience the city in terms of all that it has to offer and become immensely successful!
